Max and Finn

When I walked out of his office after the hottest sex of my life, I thought I’d left Max Douglas behind me forever—along with my favorite argyle socks and my self-respect. The last thing I need is the too-serious, too-sexy former Marine living across the hall from me while he acts as a bodyguard for one of my students. Especially since he fired me from my job tutoring his brother—after we hooked up.

I shouldn’t want him. I should despise him after the way he treated me. But he’s exactly my type: older, experienced, in control—and it’s obvious the lust is still mutual. While I may not be able to keep our relationship strictly professional, I’m determined to keep it purely physical. But when the stalker threats escalate, it looks like Max is going to be sticking around the school for a while—and the more I get to know him, the more I’m in danger of losing my heart.

“If that kid’s life, or yours, or anyone else’s were in jeopardy, I’d do what was required.” Max’s twitch returned.

“But you’ll tell me if things escalate.”

“I will. Just let me do my job.”

“Of course I will. Jesus, Max. Show a little faith.” I strode toward the door, my goal to throw his ass out. That fast bastard grabbed my arm as I passed, stopping me cold. I tried to jerk free. “Hey.

He reeled me into his chest, gripping both my wrists in one large hand and I huffed in shock. “Let me go.”

“…the fun of this author’s books is the witty banter, the comedic internal dialogue of her first person narrators, the frequently hysterical situations her characters find themselves in (everyone knows the toaster is the kitchen’s bravest appliance, after all), not to mention the sizzling sexual chemistry between her heroes.”

“I don’t think so.” His chest brushed mine and I drew back in alarm, bumping into the bookshelf. I tried to free myself, but damn he was strong, and struggling made his touch exhilarating.

Oh, no. No. No.

“What the fuck, Max?” I needed to keep my tone firm, but I was breathless and he heard it. His pupils dilated. His thumb stroked my wrist. “Quit manhandling me.”

“You are such a…distraction. I’m here to get something done. But, ever since you walked into my office and shut that door, I can’t stop thinking about you.”

“What? You don’t even like me.”

“Not like you? I fired you because I liked you too much.” Max’s gaze slid hotly to my mouth. “I shouldn’t do this. I should not be attracted to you, especially here, but I can’t stop wanting you. And you feel exactly the same way.”

“In your dreams.”

“Definitely in my dreams. Nightly.” He hovered near enough that his breath touched my lips.

“You…I…”

An unexpected dimple creased his cheek and then, exactly like the first time in his office, Max licked the corner of my mouth and desire lit me from inside. Heat lapped along my spine and blossomed in my bloodstream. Then that son of a bitch pulled out the big guns and floored me with a boyish smile that was all charm and mischief. “You’re blushing, Michael.”

He released his grip on my wrists and cupped my jaw and I just couldn’t help myself. RoboCop had officially left the building and in his place, an affectionate Max Douglas turned me into a gullible fool. I caved completely, forgetting every slight and stiff word between us, every moment of pain and exposure, and instead I rubbed my evening stubble into the warm flesh of his palm.
